Studies on Lead Poisoning

Abstract
Lead is widely used in many industries and in everyday-life. For example, leads are used for protection of the nuclear radiation, in making joints of cast-iron pipe, in painting and even in making toys. From the view point of public health, the lead is of great importance because the lead intoxication occurs in a considerable number of the workers exposed to lead. Urinary lead level and urinary coproporphyrin level have a highly significance in diagnosing the lead intoxication.
For the purpose of evaluating the normal urinary lead level of Korean male adults, a study was carried out during the period of 3 months, from June 1st to September ????1968. Samples of urine were collected from 106 ?????had never been exposed to lead. the lead level in urine was determined by Dithizone method and urinary coproporphyrin was detected by the Brugsch method modified by Fisher.
The results obtained from this study were as follows:
1. The mean of urinary lead level of Korean male adults was 36.6¡¾16.4 ¥ìg/l, the median 36.4 ¥ìg/l and the range 8¡90 ¥ìg/l.
2. The urinary lead level and the urinary coproporphyrin level didn¢¥t show any relationship with age.
3. There was no correlation between urinary lead level and urinary coproporphyrin level.
4. The mean values of urinary lead levels in groups of different occupations showed 33.2¡¾10.9¥ìg/l in clerical workers, 38.3¡¾13.2 ¥ìg/l in electrical workers, 33.9¡¾12.8 ¥ìg/l in miscellaneous workers and 39.1¡¾18.5 ug/l in others, but there were no statistically significant differences among them.
